The Hofstra volleyball team was defeated on the road three sets to none, against the Towson University Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 12. Hofstra struggled, as they were unable to gain momentum in any of the game sets against Towson. Towson stayed strong on the attack, not falling behind in any of the sets. Towson now sits at an impeccable 25-1 on the year as they continue to dominate both the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and out-of-conference teams.
The first of three sets remained very close throughout the course of the game, as both teams were neck-and-neck. Towson was able to strike first as a kill from Fay Bakodimou gave the Tigers the early 1-0 lead.
Throughout the first 10 points, it was Hofstra on the attack, highlighted by a kill from Beatriz Alves which gave the Pride a 10-9 lead. Hofstra, playing well up until this point, could still not find a way to break away from Towson as both teams continued to trade points.
An attack error by Bakodimou knotted the game up at 16 a piece. A string of mistakes by the Pride allowed Towson a little breathing room as they regained a 19-16 lead. From that point on, the Tigers did not look back as they managed to win the first set with a final score of 25-20.
Towson, picking up right where they left off, started the second set with an emphatic statement, scoring the first seven points of the set and giving them a strong 7-0 lead. Towson’s Victoria Barrett had herself an impressive four kills during this stretch.
Hofstra attempted to battle back and shorten the lead, although mistakes throughout the quarter halted them. Towson’s 7-0 opening mark proved to be too much as they went on to win the second set with a final score of 25-14.
The Pride, now down two sets, started the third set much better than the second, as a few attack errors by Towson led them to an early 2-0 lead. A kill by Nina Kajic to go along with a service ace quickly tied the game for the Tigers. The third set looked like the first as the game was close between both teams for a good part of it with the score quickly becoming 6-6 early on. Towson’s Bakodimou put up two kills shortly after, and the score widened to 10-7 Towson.
The Pride answered back with a kill of their own by Sarah Pierre as they looked to gain the lead back. Towson however quickly widened their lead as the Pride simply had no answer for Towson’s attack. Towson, a little while later, already up 15-12, went on a 4-0 stretch, increasing their lead to 19-12. Barrett gained herself another two kills in the process. From that point on, Towson took care of business and defeated Hofstra 25 to 21, winning the match three sets to none.
Hofstra now sits at 17-10 after the loss and will look to quickly regroup as they will face off against Towson again in a rematch on Sunday, Nov. 13.
