The Hofstra baseball team fell to the College of William & Mary (W&M) Tribe, 10-4, at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Sunday, May 1. The Pride drops to a record of 20-18, after losing only one game of a three-part series with W&M as the Pride begins the final month of the regular season with a defeat on the road. The Pride’s conference lead over the Tribe is one game.
Hofstra had a fast start in the top of the first with the bases loaded and Santino Rosso up at bat. Rosso struck a ball up the middle into centerfield, allowing Brian Morrell and Jake Liberatore to cross home plate for the first runs of the game.
The offense continued for Hofstra in the top of the third as Will Kennedy lined a double to right centerfield before being driven in on a Kevin Bruggeman single. Rosso stepped up again when he hit a ball down the right-field line for the Pride’s third hit, and second double, of the inning. Bruggeman, who stole second, made his way to home on the hit by Rosso to extend the Pride’s lead to 4-1.
The Tribe responded in the bottom of the third, as Hofstra starter Brad Camarda allowed two straight walks, one with the bases loaded. Immediately after, Nate Goranson singled to left field, and scored both Joe Delossantos and Mark Trotta, tying the game at four.
The rest of the game was silent for Hofstra’s batters while William & Mary continue to pile on. David Hogarth scored a second run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Tribe their first lead of the game, 5-4. Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh, with a man on first and second, Delossantos hit a three-run homerun off of Aljo Sujak making it 8-4 for William & Mary.
That dominant stretch continued in the bottom of the eighth as Trotta singled to right field, allowing Ben Williamson to make home plate. Right after, with Hogarth on third, Trotta took second base. Bruggeman’s throw down to second on the play allowed Hogarth to steal home and extend the lead to 10-4.
With only two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Pride returns home for the first time in two weeks for a game against Iona College on Tuesday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
