In a battle against an Ivy League foe, the Hofstra women’s soccer team fell to the Brown University Bears by a score of 2-1 at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Friday, Aug. 30. 

Brown controlled the action for much of the first half, scoring the first frame’s only goal. Abby Carchio notched the tally on an impressive free kick and added two corner kicks in the opening half. In addition to leading on the scoreboard, Brown nearly doubled the Pride in the shot chart to cement their first-half command.

After being outplayed, the Pride was fortunate to be down just one goal heading into halftime. Freshman goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich made many critical saves, including one just after Brown’s first goal, keeping the Pride in the game. This proved to be a jump-start for the visitors, as they swung the momentum onto their side at the start of the second half. 

Corner kicks were a theme in this game, and the Pride was able to flip the narrative on Brown in the game’s last frame. Hofstra quickly earned two corner kicks, and on the latter, junior forward Sabrina Bryan tied the score from 30 yards out on an assist from senior defender Monique Iannella. 

The score wasn’t tied for long, however, as Claire Myers scored a goal in transition on an assist from Brittany Raphino to make it 2-1. After Brown took the lead, Hofstra wasn’t able to muster a single shot for the rest of the game, dropping the contest by one goal. 

Brown outshot Hofstra 13-11, with sophomore Miri Taylor notching three shots to supplement Taylor’s four. The game did not have the feel of a late August matchup, with 33 fouls total and two yellow cards drawn.
