A 15-4 shot advantage was not enough for the Hofstra women’s soccer team as Fairfield University hands the Pride their first loss of the season 1-0 in their home opener.

The loss came despite the same aggressive effort that propelled Hofstra over Bucknell. This time it was the opponent who was able to break the through in the second half, overcoming the disparity in shots.

Goalkeeper Aytana Muschajew had a big day for the Stags, coming up with nine saves to fend off the Pride’s countless attacks.

Six different Pride players tested the keeper with at least one shot on goal, with Jordan Littleboy, Lucy Porter and Bella Richards each striking it within the perimeter twice – all to no avail.

Muschajew was all over the place for the Stags – in one instance, tipping a Porter header over the crossbar; in another, coming out of the box to strip Jenn Buoncore of the ball after she had passed Fairfield’s back line.

Capitalizing on Fairfield’s ability to keep Hofstra off the board was Hanley Courter, who exploited a Pride miscue and bolted a shot that hit the back of the net from 18 yards out.

The goal came in the 53rd minute at the hands of Ashley Wilson, who played entirety of the second half, while Jenna Borresen played the first 45 minutes.

Wilson also recorded the only save in the match for Hofstra.

Prior to the loss, the Pride had won 15 of its last 16 games. Now, Hofstra is 1-1 on the season and will look to bounce back against Boston University on Thursday night.

The Terriers have lost their last two matchups against the Pride and will also be looking to get back on track after starting the season 0-2.

The matchup will take place at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m.
