Sarah Cornell’s near spotless outing from the pitcher’s circle was not enough as Hofstra softball fell 1-0 to the University of Central Florida in extra innings Monday afternoon in Orlando, Florida.
No score headed into the eighth inning, UCF’s Cassady Brewer broke the tie on a walk-off single to center field, her second run batted in of the season.
Cornell, now 5-3, struck out 10 hitters over 7.2 innings. She allowed just the one run on four hits and two walks.
UCF’s starter Alea White outmatched Cornell, tossing a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts and only two hits, surrendering no walks.
Kristin Hallam and Megan Patierno had the lone hits of the game for the Pride. Hallam’s base hit ended her 0-8 skid over the past two games, bringing her season batting average to .282.
Lydia Witkowski’s five-game hitting streak was snapped after going 0-3 at the plate after striking out three times.
For UCF, Brewer collected two of the team’s four hits, marking her fourth multi-hit game through 10 contests.
Megan Greenwell and Aubrey Johnson logged the other two hits. Greenwell advances her hitting streak to three games and Johnson picked up her first base hit in three games.
Hofstra plays one last time this trip Tuesday afternoon against North Florida in Jacksonville, FL.
