The Hofstra women’s soccer team’s winning streak came to an end on Thursday, April 1 against Drexel University. The Dragons held the visiting Pride to a 1-1 decision through double overtime.
While the score showed a deadlock between the two teams, Hofstra dominated possession and took six times as many shots as their opponents. Seven of the Pride’s 30 shots were on goal. The Pride’s main attack came in the second half when they recorded 16 of their shots, stemming from strong wing play to penetrate the Drexel defense.
Despite Hofstra’s aggressive style of play, it was the home team who got on the board first in the second half. Unlike the Pride’s previous opponents, Drexel fended off the Pride’s constant attack and worked to counterattack on the other end. The first goal came in the 68th minute when Delaney Lappin broke through Hofstra’s back line to chase a through ball to the end line and draw a penalty in the box. Junior Lauren Curry got Hofstra goalie Skylar Kuzmich to dive the other way for the first goal.
Even after the goal, Hofstra was still in full control of possession. Drexel goalkeeper Miyuki Schoyen checked into the match early in the first half after Shannon Riordan left in the fourth minute. Schoyen tallied six saves and was helped by her defense to clear out some wide-open chances for Hofstra in the box.
The equalizing goal came in the 89th minute for the Pride, when Miri Taylor settled a long ball for Lucy Porter who found sophomore defender Anja Suttner to take the shot. Schoyen made a valiant effort to get her right hand to the ball, but it slipped past her to tie up the match and give Suttner her third goal of the season.
The last time the two teams met, it took an extra period to decide the match as the Pride got the deciding goal at home. This time, however, the match would stall out through two halves of extra time. The Pride opened up the Dragons’ defense but could not find the back of the net.
Taylor led Hofstra with six shots and tied with Suttner for shots on goal with two. Kuzmich saved four of the five shots on her net.
Hofstra comes back home with a 6-0-1 record for their final two matches of the season. They will face Adelphi University on Monday, April 5.
