The Pride began their final series of the regular season against Towson University on Friday in Maryland, splitting the doubleheader in a 4-3 loss in the first game, and a 12-0 win in the second.
Sarah Cornell took the mound for the Pride to open the day. She allowed four runs on three hits and struck out seven through six innings of work.
The Pride got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Kristin Hallam started off by reaching first on an error. After stealing second base and reaching third on an error by the catcher, Hallam was able to score after Brielle Pietrafesa grounded out to the second baseman. Sarah Edwards hit a solo shot to centerfield to make it 2-0 Hofstra.
It was a pitcher’s duel up until the bottom of the fourth inning when Cornell gave up two two-run home runs.
Hofstra scored again in the top of seventh when Kaitlyne Musa singled to center field scoring Edwards. That wouldn’t be enough to defeat the Tigers in the first game.
The Pride was on a four-game losing streak heading into the second game of the doubleheader. Sophie Dandola got the start for the Pride hoping to end the losing streak.
Dandola gave up no runs, allowed three hits and struck out one through six innings of work.
Hofstra scored first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Michaela Transue walked with the bases scoring Edwards. During the next at bat, Hallam got hit by a pitch and Courtney Scarpato scored.
Brittany Allocca homered to left field in the top of the third inning. The Pride have a combined 61 home runs on the season, to hold the single season record for most homeruns in the program’s history.
Hofstra bats really came to life in the top of the sixth inning. The Pride scored nine runs.
Transue hit a double to center field which scored Patierno. Allocca singled which scored Kaitlyn Musa. Then Edwards walked, which scored Transue.
Scarpato then doubled to left field which allowed both Hallam and Allocca to score. Towson changed their pitcher and she walked the first two batters she faced, allowing Edwards to score.
Musa, who was up for the second time this inning, hit another single to center field and Nikki Michalowski and Scarpato both scored. Hallam also hit another single for the second time in the inning allowing Megan Patierno to score.
Dandola earned her fourth solo shutout of the season.
The Pride play their final game of the regular on Saturday as they finish up their series vs. Towson.
