The quiet power of ‘Sorry, Baby’

Josh Gordon, Staff Writer April 15, 2026

In my quest to find great movies, I sometimes come across duds. Other times, I come across absolute gems that change the way I think. In this case, “Sorry, Baby,” from director Eva Victor, is one...

Love defies all in ‘Wicked: For Good’

Kimberly Lopez, Staff Writer November 25, 2025
SPOILER WARNING Perhaps, I have been changed for the better. The world turned pink and green again with the release of the second part of the “Wicked” movie: “Wicked: For Good.” The highly anticipated film had the job of adapting the second act of the musical, which is a difficult task in and of itself.

‘Black Phone 2’ is better than the original

Frankie DiCalogero, Editor-At-Large October 29, 2025
This year has been a huge year for horror films. One that stood out was “Black Phone 2,” a sequel to the original 2021 film “The Black Phone.” The first installment of the series was well received by critics and crushed the box office, making over $160 million against their budget of under $20 million. While “Black Phone 2” received a higher budget and a bigger rollout, it also had to deal with lofty expectations. Fortunately, these expectations were not just met but shattered, and it became one of my favorite movies this year.

‘After the Hunt’ wows viewers with intense storylines

Abby Gibson, Arts & Entertainment Editor October 14, 2025
Personal morality is put to the test in the new psychological thriller “After the Hunt” starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film premiered at the 63rd New York Film Festival on Sept. 26 and wasted no time in pulling viewers into a tense and unsettling story about a college professor, Alma Olsson (Roberts), whose world begins to unravel as a queer student, Maggie Price (Edebiri), accuses the professor’s colleague, Henrik Gibson (Garfield), of sexual assault. I had the opportunity to attend a roundtable with the cast and crew where questions regarding the creation and content of the film were discussed.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson takes his biggest performance risk yet in “The Smashing Machine,” an A24 biopic about mixed martial arts legend Mark Kerr. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, ending with an enthusiastic 15-minute standing ovation, a sign that Johnson’s transformation has impressed critics and fans alike.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ is unironically awful

Peter Pistone, Staff Writer April 23, 2025
Video game adaptations have become increasingly prominent over the last few years. From television to film, we have seen how some of the most iconic video games have been adapted in a new way for fans and critics alike. In the last few years, the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie trilogy and the hilariously awful “Borderlands” film are just some of the adaptations brought to the silver screen. While 2023 gave us “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie, there was still one video game whose adaptation many were patiently waiting for since its release in 2011: “Minecraft.”

I watched every ‘Scooby-Doo’ movie

Paige Sanacora, Staff Writer October 29, 2024
At the beginning of 2024, I was feeling nostalgic and decided to rewatch a few childhood favorites of mine from the “Scooby-Doo” franchise. Even in my adult life, I frequently find myself going back to the franchise’s shows and movies when I want to throw something on. This year, watching one “Scooby-Doo” movie wasn’t enough, and it somehow turned into watching all 48 movies that have been made since 1987. As Halloween is coming up, I wanted to share my five favorites.

Celebrating 20 years of ‘Saw’

Vanessa Flanagan, Special to the Chronicle October 29, 2024
“Saw” was released in 2004 and has turned out nine sequels over the past 20 years with an 11th installment on the way in 2025. The franchise features its signature villain, Jigsaw, also known as John Kramer, and his murderous traps. Jigsaw, a cancer patient with limited time left, views these “games” as rehabilitation for people to appreciate the life they have. He does not consider himself a murderer and explicitly states “killing is distasteful” in “Saw V.” Jigsaw offers people a chance at survival; those who die do so by their own choices, while those who survive are supposedly instantly rehabilitated.

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ masters animated storytelling

Anna DeGoede- EDITOR-IN-CHIEF April 9, 2024

Eighteen years after the first film kicked its way into theaters, the fourth installment of the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise, titled “Kung Fu Panda 4,” was released on March 8. Right from the get-go, “Kung Fu Panda 4” stepped away from its dependency on the star-studded martial arts group the Furious Five. Instead, the film gave its titular protagonist Po (voiced by Jack Black) a new task: hanging up his hat and becoming the spiritual mentor to the next Dragon Warrior.
