The Hofstra University men’s soccer team extended their win streak to four on Tuesday, Oct. 7, defeating Loyola University Maryland 1-0 at Captains Field. This is the second year in a row that the Greyhounds have been shut out by the Pride as Loyola fell 3-0 to Hofstra in Baltimore last season.
With the non-conference win, the Pride hold an 8-4 overall record. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds fall to a lackluster 2-8-1 overall record.
“We did what we had to do, we didn’t give them much,” said Hofstra head coach Richard Nuttall about the performance. “That was a lovely, solid win against a decent team.”
In the 15th minute Hofstra got their first chance on goal. Laurie Goddard received the ball from a corner kick and placed it towards the bottom corner of the net. However, Loyola goalkeeper Connor O’Keefe came up with the stop on the goal line.
Pablo Hempelmann-Perez was a super-sub for the Pride, as he scored the lone goal of the match in the 41st minute. Hempelmann-Perez received a through ball into the box from Goddard, before working his way across the six-yard box and tucking the ball away. This was Hempelmann-Perez’s first goal of the season.
“[Hempelmann-Perez] is a game changer when he’s on,” Nuttall said. “He’s very skillful and you saw what he can do with his skill to get the goal.”
Hofstra goalkeeper Gino Cervoni recorded his fourth clean sheet of the season and second in three games with a two save performance. Cervoni also took care of dangerous crosses into the box to help push the Pride onto the win.
Nuttall was pleased with Cervoni’s performance, admitting that they will have a difficult decision to make when Sean Bohan returns. “In the first half he’s covered a couple good crosses and he’s doing well,” Nuttall said.
The Greyhounds were undisciplined at times, being booked for four yellow cards. Tyler Flynn, Curtis Wagner, Nick Turturro and Loyola head coach Steve Nichols each received yellow cards.
Meanwhile, the Pride were squeaky clean, not being carded once. “I’m pleased with that, that we stuck to our task and did our job and didn’t receive anything there,” Nuttall said.
In the end, Nuttall was satisfied with his squad’s performance in the 1-0 win. He looks for his team to carry their momentum into a conference matchup with Stony Brook University. The two squads previously met Sept. 13, with Hofstra winning the match 3-0.
“This is a very very big game against Stony Brook. They’re good and they will work hard,” Nuttall said. “It will be a scrap and maybe one goal on the day will decide it.”
The Pride travelled to Stony Brook on Saturday, Oct. 11. Kickoff against the Seawolves was set for 6:31 p.m. Hofstra looked to continue their win streak and add on to their 4-1 conference record.
