In their last dual of the season, the Hofstra University wrestling team fell 45-3 to No. 11 Rutgers University. They won just one match on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Teague Strobel (125) fought for the Pride’s sole victory, beating No. 24 Ayden Smith in overtime. The Pride’s dual meet season ended at 3-15.
The 125-pound bout was a rematch from earlier this season when Smith beat Strobel at the Keystone Classic on Nov. 23, 2025. The two went toe-to-toe, the score reading 1-1 going into overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory period and two additional 30-second overtime periods where both wrestlers scored an escape, Strobel ultimately won 3-1 by tiebreaker criteria. The win is Strobel’s first over a ranked opponent this season.
Coming off Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Week honors, Guage Shipp (133) battled Rutgers’ No. 25 Dylan Shawver. The Scarlet Knight had an early 7-1 lead before the end of the second period when Shipp threw Shawver over his shoulder and caught him on his back for a takedown and near-fall points. Shawver got a reversal and separated himself in the third period, ultimately winning by decision 13-8.
Hofstra’s Jake Slotnick had the only other close match of the night against No. 18 Andrew Barbosa, falling by decision just 4-1.
Jackson Slotnick (149), Eric Shindel (157) and Matt Rogers (174) were the starters for the night, while Chase Liardi (141), Josh Jorgee (184), Will Conlon (197) and Adrian Sans (285) filled in their normal weight classes.
Hofstra’s final competition before the postseason was the Patriot Last Chance Open on Sunday, Feb. 22, at George Mason University.
