The Hofstra Pride women’s soccer team looked like it had momentum going into its first CAA matchup against the Drexel Dragons, as the Pride previously defeated the Knights of Fairleigh Dickenson and the Rams of Fordham, Sadly, that momentum was gone before the game started, and the Pride was blanked by the Dragons, 3-0.
One of the reasons Hofstra lost the match was due to missing shots. Both Kristin Desmond and Emily Agudelo took multiple shots in the game, but one look at the box score would show that most were missed.
Out of seven shots for Desmond, only three were on goal. Of Agudelo’s five shots, only one was on net. When a team is having difficulty trying to fire the ball on goal, it’s usually not a good sign for the rest of the game.
On the other hand, the Dragons didn’t seem to have much of a problem. Vanessa Kara – Drexel’s leader in shots for the game – shot the ball six times, four of which were on net. At the 19th minute of the game, Kara scored a goal that extended Drexel’s lead to 2-0.
The first goal was scored by Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll. Shaelyn McCarty scored the third and final goal for the Dragons.
The big question surrounding the Hofstra Pride women’s soccer team is who will be in net for the entire game: Ashley Wilson or Friederike Mehring. Both women have performed at the same outstanding level for the entire season.
This game isn’t going to determine who wins the goalkeeper position battle, as Wilson and Mehring both struggled in this matchup. With each facing nine shots, Wilson gave up two goals and Mehring surrendered one.
Maybe now isn’t the time to declare a full-match goalie, but at some point before the end of the season, head coach Simon Riddiough will have to make the difficult decision.
