The Hofstra Pride field hockey team dropped its fourth consecutive contest on the road against the University of Maine, on Friday, Sept. 9, at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex in a non-conference tilt. With the loss, the Pride now sit at 1-4 in the early going of the season.

It was a defensive slugfest throughout the afternoon, with both teams struggling to get their offense going in the right direction. Maine scored the first and only goal of the day with 5:04 remaining in the first period, with a goal by Poppy Lambert, her second of the season, assisted by Madisyn Hartley and Tereza Holubcova. The Pride had numerous opportunities to even the score but failed to convert on five first-half shots.

In the early stages of the third period, Cami Larsson got a great look on goal at the 31:03 mark, but her shot was ultimately blocked by the Black Bears’ defense. Hofstra goalkeeper Merlijn van der Vegt continued to stay strong for the Pride, with three tough saves, keeping it at a one-goal deficit. Hofstra’s best shot of the game came with 5:23 left to go in the third period, as a hard shot by Jamie Mc Millan off the Hofstra penalty corner narrowly passed the goalkeeper, but Maine’s Mia Borley snatched the ball up for the save.

The fourth quarter was much more of the same as Hofstra once again managed to put up multiple shots on goal without any reaching the back of the net.

Despite the loss, the Pride outshot Maine 13-8, with eight being on goal. Maine ended up with six shots on goal out in the contest

Gorsse and Adrianna Losiak led the way for Hofstra with two shots on goal. Van der Vegt recorded five saves.

Lambert and Chloe Walton led the way for Maine with two shots on goal and three shots in total. Borley recorded eight saves in the win.

Hofstra continues their stay in Orono, Maine, battling Kent State University on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m.
