A pair of goals from Eliot Goldthorp sealed a 3-2 victory for the Hofstra men’s soccer team over the Long Island University Sharks on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The Pride moves to a 2-2 record after back-to-back losses to the University of Rhode Island and Stony Brook University.
“I thought it was a great college game,” said Richard Nuttall, head coach of the Hofstra men’s soccer team. “There were some spells in the game that were very, very good.”
It took until the 14th minute for the first mark on the scoreboard when Goldthorp got a pass from junior forward Ryan Carmichael to find the back of the net.
Sharks defender Andre Puente responded with a goal of his own, off a corner, to make it a tied game with barely two minutes to spare in the first half of the match.
The halftime break proved useful for the Pride as multiple members packed a punch to get the edge over the visiting team. Junior forward Oliver Svalander scored his first goal of the season, courtesy of an assist from Jason Ramirez in the 67th minute. Three minutes later, Goldthorp scored his second goal of the day and third of the season to cap of the offense for the night with an assist from Roc Carles.
“I think we’ve really done well today,” Goldthorp said. “We’ve really competed. When everyone’s on it and really competing, that’s when I get my energy.”
It took the Sharks nearly 20 minutes to mount a response to make it a one-goal game, with Puente’s second goal of the evening at the 89th minute.
“It was just about keeping the game going,” Nuttall said. “I’m just so happy we’ve won the game.”
The Pride’s next appearance is against the Monmouth University Hawks at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, New Jersey, on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
