Hofstra field hockey battled more than just the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Tuesday as Mother Nature sabotaged the afternoon with not one, but two lightning delays – causing the first half to last over two hours. On top of the lightning delays, regulation time wasn’t enough to produce a decision. The Pride went to their second shootout of the season, and much like their first against Virginia Commonwealth University, came out with a 2-1 win.
Before the storms set in, Sacred Heart struck early. Junior Makenna Crawford put a ball in the goal in the seventh minute. After over an hour of delays, Hofstra took over the game, both offensively and defensively.
The Pride’s production came from their bench. Redshirt sophomore Madison Georgiana scored her first career goal off an assist from Cami Larsson, the team’s leading scorer. The game-winning goal of the shootout was netted by senior Madison Sauve and was the only goal of the shootout.
Hofstra’s offense was aggressive, keeping their foot on the gas and the Pioneer defenders on their heels. They poured in 28 shots, including 12 on goal, forcing Sacred Heart’s defense and goalie Hailey Power to stay focused for over 90 minutes.
Adding to Hofstra’s impressive play was the team’s defense. They stifled Sacred Heart’s offense, only allowing 17 shots, seven of which were on goal.
The lack of shots helped Pride goalie Betty Bosma keep Sacred Heart in check, adding six more saves to her already impressive 71 on the season. Despite Hofstra’s record of 2-7, Bosma has been the best in the Colonial Athletic Association in saves by a substantial margin. Northeastern University’s Julia Gluyas stands behind her with 41.
The win snapped a seven-game skid for the Pride. The Pioneers are 6-4 on the season after the loss.
The Pride has two games left in their non-conference schedule before they play at Towson University on Sept. 28. They look to build upon their win with a home game against Rider University on Friday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.
