The Hofstra University field hockey team was defeated by Monmouth University 7-0 on Friday, Sept. 20, at Cindy Lewis Stadium. With the loss, the Pride sits at 2-5 on the season.
The Hawks, the reigning Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) regular season champions, opened conference play with a victory and are now 5-1 on the season.
The Hawks struck early in the first quarter with an unassisted goal by freshman Milla Frye. Less than 30 seconds later, Sofia Fouces scored another goal on a breakaway. This brought Monmouth to an early 2-0 lead.
The Pride were unable to put up any shots on goal in the first quarter due to Monmouth’s strong defense.
The Hawks kept their momentum going in the second quarter as Jess Tucker scored on a give-and-go, providing an even larger lead.
Hofstra then called on goalkeeper Tessa Lambright to make her first career appearance and relieve starting keeper Pieke Roos.
“After the third goal that was scored, we ended up thinking that we wanted a change to see how our team would handle that transition,” said Hofstra head coach Hillary Fitts. “I think [Lambright] did a great job with stepping up.”
The Hawks continued to dominate, as junior Emily Singer scored her first career goal on assists from Fouces and Tucker.
Hofstra held the score at 4-0 heading into halftime. And in the third quarter, Monmouth’s Morgan Kato tipped the pass in the goal from Frye, extending the Hawks lead.
Hofstra had opportunities to score on four penalty corners in the third quarter but failed to convert these openings into goals.
The Hawks did not stop, as they kept rolling in the fourth quarter with a goal by Lilly Ricks on Fouces’ second assist of the game. To cap off the victory, Frye put up her second goal of the game, ending the game with a dominant 7-0 win for Monmouth.
“We just needed to do a better job of not allowing so many goals and then starting to capitalize on our opportunities when we can,” Fitts said.
The Hawks had seven goals across six players and took a total of 25 shots on goal. The Pride took 10 shots on goal but were unable to convert any into goals. In her first career appearance for the Pride, Lambright made four saves.
The Pride looked to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Wagner College. The Seahawks came off a 4-2 win against Bucknell University. Last season Hofstra defeated Wagner 2-0.
