Hofstra men’s lacrosse proved once again that it could be an offensive juggernaut as it downed Harvard 15-9 at Shuart Stadium on Saturday. Senior attackmen Jamie Lincoln and Jay Card combined for eight goals (five from Lincoln) in the first game the two have combined for more than five goals this season. This was also Card’s first multi-goal game of the season.
The two attackers from Canada combined for 64 goals last season but only had nine goals between them through three games.
“I can’t tell you what made it happen,” Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney said of the breakout game. “They had opportunities to make it happen earlier in the season, but it wasn’t ready to happen I guess.”
Junior midfielder Brad Loizeaux put the Pride on the board first scoring just over two minutes into the game off a pass from Lincoln. Harvard fired back though scoring three of the next four goals to take an early 3-2 lead.
It was the third straight game that the Pride trailed in the first quarter and Tierney noted that it was something the Pride would try to remedy in practice.
“I won’t subsitute a first quarter flurry for the final score,” Tierney said, “but I will continue to try to work hard to get four quarters to match what we’d like to see.”
Hofstra scored the next three goals, two by Lincoln and one by senior attack Stephen Bentz, to end the first quarter leading 5-3.
Another flurry in the second quarter, four straight goals over an eight minute span, opened up the lead to 9-4.
Harvard did score two straight goals heading into the half to finish the first two quarters with the Pride leading 9-6.
Hofstra dominated the third quarter, scoring five of the seven goals, and sealing the victory. The teams each added a goal in the fourth quarter, reaching the final of 15-9.
“I like to see those types of numbers on the offensive side, I don’t like to see those numbers on the defensive side, just like any other coach,” Tierney said.
Junior goalie Andrew Gvozden finished with 15 saves in the game, including seven in the fourth quarter.
Hofstra moves to 4-0 on the season and will next face Air Force. The Pride moved to no. 4 in the national rankings, trailing just Syracuse, Virginia and Notre Dame.
