Patrick Mahomes has signed a 10-year, $450 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, the largest such deal in American sports history. Additionally, the deal can be worth up to $503 million if Mahomes and the Chiefs meet certain incentives.
The deal is the first half-billion dollar sports contract ever. The Chiefs’ focus now shifts to creating a dynasty with Mahomes at the forefront for years to come.
The contract includes an injury guarantee at $140 million and a no trade-clause. Mahomes still has two years and $28 million dollars left on his rookie contract, so the extension will commence in the 2022 season. Mahomes will be a Kansas City Chief for at least the next 12 years.
Mahomes will be 36 years old by 2032, when the contract is set to expire.
“The team guarantees Patrick Mahomes’ salary a year out,” said Ian Rapoport, a national insider for NFL Network and NFL. “And if they don’t pick up each guarantee, they have to cut him.”
Sports contracts are sometimes difficult to follow since certain terminology can be new to fans and since teams include certain agreements that are quite specific.
“Rolling guarantees are common in NFL contracts, but never over the entire life of a 10-year extension,” said NFL reporter Tom Pelissero. “Patrick Mahomes gets $63 million fully guaranteed at signing and $103 million by next March.”
Additionally, Mahomes is prohibited from doing certain activities after signing this hefty contract. Activities such as playing baseball, jet skiing and playing basketball are strictly prohibited for the Chiefs player.
“I read a lot of them,” Mahomes said. “It’s pretty much every physical activity you could possibly do. I’ll probably be sticking with football and video games for now.”
Mahomes has been one of the best quarterbacks of the past few years in the NFL. The star quarterback won MVP in his first full campaign during the 2018-2019 season after putting up 50 touchdowns and 5,097 yards in the regular season.
This past season, Mahomes again performed well with 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns and only five interceptions. During the 2019-2020 playoffs, Mahomes stepped up for his team and recorded 901 yards, throwing for 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Mahomes’ offensive numbers during the most recent postseason were twice the amount he had put up in the playoffs during his MVP campaign. With one Super Bowl ring under his belt, Mahomes has shown that he is capable of much more.
Patrick Mahomes will once more be leading the way as the Chiefs look to defend their Super Bowl title this upcoming season.
