On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Hofstra University women’s soccer team traveled to play their Long Island rival of the Stony Brook University Seawolves for a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matchup where the Pride won 2-1, extending their win streak to five.

The Pride improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Seawolves fell to 3-2-4 overall and 1-1-2 in CAA play.

Defender Gabriella Marte scored the game-winner for the Pride in the 19th minute. After Hofstra won a corner kick, midfielder Millie Davies sent an in-swinger toward the back post. No one touched the ball until it took a bounce near defender Cailey Welch, who headed the ball back across the goal frame for Marte. She was in a perfect position to head the ball down and into the goal to give Hofstra the 2-1 lead. This marked Marte’s first goal of  her career.

Goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich came up big in the net as she recorded eight total saves on the afternoon. This tied her career-high eight saves in the 2022 CAA championship game against Northeastern University.

The first goal of the game came in the 16th minute by forward Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir. Midfielder Dagny Run Petursdottir carried the ball through the midfield before she played the ball to the left, finding Thorhallsdottir. After taking her first touch forward, Thorhallsdottir quickly gained control before she cut toward the middle and rocketed the shot into the far post, giving Hofstra the 1-0 lead. This marked Thorhallsdottir’s first goal of the season.

Stony Brook did score a goal of their own in the 18th minute. Forward Reilly Rich scored her fifth goal of the season against the Pride, with the assist going to midfielder Linn Beck.

The only action that happened in the second half was Davies picking up the only yellow card of the game after a foul.

Stony Brook’s goalkeeper Nicolette Pasquarella made five total saves in the afternoon.

The Pride had 15 total shots and seven on goal, while the Seawolves had 17 total shots and nine on goal. Davies, Thorhallsdottir, Welch, midfielder Olivia Pearse, forward Wiktoria Fronc and forward Mathilde Braithwaite each recorded two shots. Thorhallsdottir and Welch’s two shots were on goal.

Stony Brook recorded more corner kicks than Hofstra, as they had seven compared to the Pride’s four.

The Pride returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 21, as they travel to Charleston, South Carolina, to face the College of Charleston in a CAA matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
