On a rainy night in Philadelphia, Hofstra women’s soccer beat the Drexel University Dragons 3-2 in overtime to break a two-game winless streak.

From the start of the game, the Pride put pressure on the Dragons’ defense with three shots in the first 10 minutes. At the 11th minute of the game, Sabrina Bryan collected a header, crossed into the box and sent the ball flying past Drexel keeper Libby Baeza to make the score 1-0.

Drexel retaliated in the 24th minute when Lauren Currey found the back of the net off a cross from Shea Tomlinson to make the score 1-1.

The Pride answered back two minutes later when a go-ahead goal from Lucy Porter made the score 2-1.  

After the flurry of goals in the opening 26 minutes, the teams continued exchanging shots throughout the first, but Hofstra held onto the lead at halftime.

At the start of the second half, Hofstra still had all the momentum from the first half and kept pressuring the Drexel defense. Around the 60th minute, the tide turned to Drexel. The Dragons had a handful of new faces on the pitch after a flurry of substitutions and started to pressure the Hofstra defense.

With six minutes remaining in regulation, Currey received a ball inside the box and shot the ball past Hofstra goalie Jenna Borresen to make the score 2-2, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Dragons pelted Borresen with three shots in a row as Hofstra did not register a shot in the first overtime period. Borresen’s three crucial saves would help the Pride force the second period of overtime.

As the second overtime period kicked off, each team recorded a shot within the first minute and then in the 103rd minute, Jenn Buoncore found Bryan in the box with a great pass that allowed her to shoot the ball past Baeza and score the game-winning goal, putting the Pride on top for a 3-2 victory over the Dragons.

With the win, the Pride move up to No. 3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings and are now two games behind No. 1 Northeastern University. Their overall conference record improves to 4-2-1 for the year.

With the regular season almost done, the Pride still have two games left to play to help improve before the playoffs begin. On Sunday, Oct. 14, they take on Elon University down in Elon, North Carolina and then face the College of Charleston in their regular season finale next Sunday, Oct. 21, at home.
