Five members of the men’s basketball team brought home hardware Thursday night at the 2009-10 CAA awards banquet in Richmond, VA. Junior guard Charles Jenkins headlined the night winning CAA Player of the Year honors. “I have been doubted a lot in my life,” Jenkins said. “So for me to be named the best player in the league it means a lot.”
Freshman Chaz Williams and Halil Kanacevic were each named to the All-Rookie team. “It means a lot individually,” Williams said, “but being on the all-rookie team doesn’t mean anything because we didn’t finish the way we wanted to.”
“It is an honor,” said Kanacevic. “It feels great.” Both freshmen were looking forward to continued success on the floor. “I am looking forward to having great seasons ahead with him,” said Williams. Kanacevic added that, “The program is going to look good for a couple of years if we keep up the hard work.”
Junior forward Greg Washington was named to the All-Defense team for the second straight year. Washington credits his defensive success to the midset. “[It is all about] not being able to quit,” said Washington. “You block a shot, you get a steal [and] it starts a run.”
The fifth and final award winner for the Pride was senior forward Miklos Szabo who was named to the All-Academic team.
Jenkins and the Pride are looking forward to living up to the expectations that have been set for next year. “There is going to be more pressure on me next year,” Jenkins said. When asked if he can live up to the pressue, Jenkins replied, “Yeah, I can.”
