Hofstra for Haiti, a fundraising program set up by the University to assist in raising funds for the country after the devastating earthquake struck on January 12, is in full swing.
Organizations campus-wide are planning events to help raise money for the campaign. The University will match up to the first $25,000 raised by the relief fund, which will be split by the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.
Currently, $2,686 has been raised. This initiative will run through February 12. “After that time, we can decide as a community what we can do” with other money raised, according to Dean of Students Pete Libman, who is the program chair.
Among the fundraising efforts was a student magician who raised over $100 by performing in the student center atrium. The Hofstra Athletic Department will be selling bracelets in both the student center atrium and select athletic events.
This past Wednesday night, a candlelight vigil organized by Jewish Student Life coordinator Ben Ring and Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Activities Kim Rhyan, took place in front of Hofstra Hall. Close to 100 people from the campus community attended.
If you would like to donate to Hofstra for Haiti, send your check to the Dean of Students office, made out to Hofstra University – Hofstra for Haiti. Students can also donate by going to Student Card Services and using their Dutch Debits account.
