The Hofstra baseball team defeated the College of William and Mary by a final score of 7-3 on the road Sunday to pick up their sixth straight victory. With the win, the Pride improve to 20-15 overall and 9-8 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play while William and Mary falls to 15-28 overall and 3-14 in the CAA.
The Pride got off to an early 4-0 lead on a grand slam by sophomore Rob Weissheier in the first inning after loading the bases with two hit batsmen and a single. The Tribe was able to answer with a run in the bottom of the inning on a double by junior Colin Lipke. Hofstra struck again in the second inning with a RBI single from senior Mikey Riesner to drive in a run. They padded their lead further in the seventh when senior Steven Foster blasted a two-run homerun to record his 200th career hit. William and Mary could only tally two more runs on a homerun in the eighth by sophomore Brandon Raquet.
In spite of William and Mary’s less than impressive record, Hofstra head coach John Russo did not underestimate the challenge his team would be up against.
“They might be in last place, but I’ll tell you what…they gave Northeastern three tough one run games. They’re really close to being the first-place team in the CAA,” Russo said.
Senior pitcher Matt Weissheier earned the win after allowing one on five hits through six innings, striking out five to improve to 4-4 on the season. In an interview on the effort of the pitching staff, Russo commented on the work Weissheier has put forward to improving.
“He’s transformed his whole body in the last two and a half years, and has stamina… and it has changed his mentality and put confidence in himself.”
