She’s The First is an on-campus organization that raises money for girls’ education in developing nations. They hold events throughout the semester, such as dance-a-thons and cupcake sales, in order to fund schooling expenses for girls.
At their most recent cupcake sale, which took place this semester, the club raised $525.
“All the money went to sending a girl to school,” Marialena Rago said, secretary of She’s the First Hofstra. “It takes $300 to send one girl and then our money will be joined with another school to send another girl.”
Their biweekly meetings are used as an opportunity to discuss upcoming events, brainstorm fundraising ideas and educate their members about what is going on in the world of girls’ education.
“A lot of progress is being made with help from people like Malala Yousafzai,” Rago said. “She just inspired a movement in India for girls’ education and independence. India has a problem with child marriages … with this movement, maybe they can change that.“
She’s The First members also show their determination to spark change.
“I joined because I really appreciate their mission statement and I believe that this organization has a lot of potential to grow,” club member Gabrielle Wasserstein said. “I love the dedication that people put into it.”
She’s The First members work to give every girl a chance at an education.
“I have always been thankful for the education I have received,” Rago said. “It has instilled confidence and independence. I think all girls around the world deserve the same feeling. Education is freeing.”
