If you’re reading this, then chances are you’re a student aspiring to have an internship and eventually a job. If this is the case, you’re going to need a resume. If you’re anything like me, you might think that you have nothing to put on your resume, but if you stop and think for a minute I bet you could come up with a pretty solid list.
Consider the type of internship or job you’re looking for. You want your resume to be a reflection of how you’ll fit the job description. List any and all relevant experience you have that would lend itself to showcasing you as the best possible candidate. This includes knowledge you have, software you’re proficient in and big projects you’ve worked on. Are you focused? Detail oriented? Organized? Don’t be afraid to include these details about yourself. You want your employer to have an idea of what kind of person you are.
If you’ve ever worked a job before, even if it was something small, put it on your resume to show you can handle responsibility. Any accomplishments you’ve made during your college career, like awards won or honors given to you, are all important things you should make a note of. Your extracurricular activities and any campus leadership positions you’ve held are also important things you can put to show for yourself.
When in doubt, ask your friends and family if they can think of anything notable you’ve done during your college career. Hofstra’s Career Center is also a great resource for putting your resume together. They can look over what you’ve already included and make suggestions for what else you should add.
Keep in mind that the whole idea of a resume is to provide a summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments. In one page, you should be able to put your best foot forward and let your future employer know what a suitable candidate you are.
