Daniel Page doubled home Hofstra’s series-clinching runs in the Pride’s first conference series win of the season with a commanding 11-1 victory over the University of Delaware at University Field on Saturday.

“We played winning baseball. We pitched really well, we got a great start, and we got a great relief performance, and even though we only had 10 hits, I thought we had really timely hits.” said Hofstra head coach John Russo.

Hofstra won the second of a three-game series against the visiting Fightin’ Blue Hens of Delaware after a 9-0 win on Friday, giving the Pride its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series win of the season.

Matt Weissheier took the bump for Hofstra to face off against Kyle Hinton of Delaware. Weissheier surrendered five hits and one earned run in six strong innings of work. The redshirt senior improved to 2-3 on the season as Hofstra grew to 14-9 overall, evening their conference record at 4-4.

The deciding runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run double off the bat of Daniel Page to give Hofstra a 2-0 lead. Those would be all the runs the Pride would need with Delaware’s lone run coming in the sixth inning.

Delaware threatened to score in the first inning with the bases loaded but Weissheier forced an Austin Niggebrugge groundout to first to end the inning. Hofstra followed with two men left on base to finish a scoreless a first inning.

The human vacuum Austin Gauthier put out all three Blue Hens in order in the top of the second before a 1-2-3 inning from Hinton.

A scoreless third inning ensued as Delaware went down in order again in the fourth before Hofstra broke open a tied game in the bottom of the inning.

Teddy Cillis reached first with a one out single to center field and reached second safely on a wild pitch. Mikey Riesner rocketed an infield single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Page cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to left.

Hofstra held a two-run lead before Niggebrugge doubled home Nick Patten from third to cut Delaware’s deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Cillis doubled to start the bottom of the sixth before scoring on a wild pitch.

Michael James took the rubber in the seventh inning for Hofstra but quickly found himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs. Chris Weiss relieved James and shut the door on Delaware’s scoring hopes with two strikeouts and a pop-up to end the inning.

The Pride exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning behind three walks, two passed balls, and three hits, including an RBI-single from Steven Foster and a three-run blast off the bat of Rob Weissheier.

Weiss picked up where he left off in the eighth inning after 20 plus minutes of rest to escape the inning untouched.

The Pride plated two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning behind a Cillis base knock up the middle to score Gauthier. Foster scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to Riesner.

An inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the top of the ninth capped off a double-digit run victory for Hofstra.

Weiss finished with four strikeouts over three hitless innings of work.

Cillis led the team with three hits which improved his season batting average from .288 to .317, second best on the team. Foster and Riesner each added multiple hits for the Pride.  

Hofstra will look to complete the series sweep against Delaware on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
