When one thinks of a choir group, usually psychology, finance, and biology majors are not the first people to come to mind. That is where Hofstra Show Choir is different.
Consisting of a wide variety of people and drawing inspiration from the popular Fox show “Glee,” the members of this singing and dancing group come together for their love of music and shared talents.
“I wanted a chance for performance,” said junior member Alexandra Cooney. “I’m a psychology major so I’m glad I have the opportunity to sing and dance without having to be a music major.”
Show Choir gives students the chance to display their love of performing without being tied down to a long future in the arts.
“I don’t see myself singing as a career, but it’s something I’m passionate about as a hobby,” said junior member and creative writing major Steve DiCarlo.
Don’t be fooled by their humble approach to performing arts; these young singers have been wowing audiences on and off campus. Started just last year by a small group of students, Show Choir has grown in size as well as number of performances.
“Since we’re still beginning, this year we had a lot more opportunities to perform,” said sophomore member and drama major Kristen Maldonado. “We sang at a Tourette syndrome benefit, and a Haiti relief benefit.” In addition, Show Choir has also performed at several open houses, admitted student days, and this year’s Music Fest.
“Music Fest is awesome, and to be a part of it felt great,” said DiCarlo. “I mean, how many college students can say they opened for Ghostface Killah?”
The group’s combination of choreography and singing was not only fun for members, the audience appeared to enjoy them as well.
“Usually choir groups sing older songs,” said freshman business major Tom Eddy who watched Show Choir at Music Fest. “I thought it was really cool that Show Choir did more modern songs that college students enjoy, and they did an awesome job.”
In deciding what modern songs to perform, Show Choir members have a pretty laid back approach. “If we’re feeling it, we sing it,” said Maldonado.
Auditions for show choir will be held in the beginning of next semester. One can access the group via Facebook, email, or Tumblr. “We will literally stop you and ask you to join,” said Maldonado.
Although Music Fest was Show Choir’s last performance of the school year, the group is looking forward to the future.
“Show Choir is a different kind of musical experience on campus,” said Cooney. “We are just going to take any opportunity we get to perform.”
